Johnny Rotten's Butter

Brilliant idea using John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols) in a TV commercial for Country Life butter, according to Billboard:

Sex Pistols singer John Lydon’s appearance in a TV commercial for Country Life butter in the U.K. has helped sales rise by 85% over the last quarter, according to parent company Dairy Crest’s interim management statement.

Citing a slight rise of 4% in group sales for the nine months ending Dec. 31 2008, the company pinpoints Lydon’s “Great British Butter” endorsement as a key factor in keeping its head above water after a reduction in doorstep sales and increasing milk prices made for a potentially challenging third quarter.

Coupled with “strong promotions,” the company experienced an 85% increase in volume sales for its ‘spreadable’ brands in the quarter ending Dec. 31 2008.

The commercial — featuring the rocker dressed head to toe in tweed – screened on major terrestrial and digital satellite channels from Oct. 1 until early Dec. 2008. It was part of a £5 million ($8.8 million at Oct. 2 rates) relaunch campaign by Country Life butter.

The campaign was created by Grey London. Nice job, with real results.

Enhanced Response

Yeah, the GoDaddy.com ads spiked online visits, reports Television Week:

GoDaddy.com saw its first Web traffic spike during the Super Bowl about 15 minutes after its first commercial ran, Web technology firm Akamai reported Sunday night.

Traffic to the site jumped to 433,206 visitors per minute at 7:30 ET, then was sustained at about 134,328 visitors for about 10 to 15 minutes after the an ran. That compares to 10,000 per minute on average for the site, Akamai said.

The spots did give the mostly male viewers incentive to go online to view their conclusions.

How much of that traffic translates into domain registrations or site hosting remains to be seen. Good use of TV to boost response — the sales message is repeated on their Web site.

My favorite spot was the Doritos “Crystal Ball:”
